Most tourists who travel to Croatia go straight to the famous coast of Istria or Dalmatia. In the region of Zagorje, around Zagreb, few tourists come. Yet this is a beautiful rural region where you can relax, with large farms, corn fields, forests, vineyards and white churches and cottages. The hilly Medvednica Mountains are one of the undiscovered gems of the country. There are many cultural attractions, unspoiled excursion destinations and the region has some excellent wines. The region is also known for its excellent cuisine and local specialties, such as soup and Zagorje cheese dumplings. Wooden toys from Zagorje and the honey cake are on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
